McReynolds Middle School students to visit Taxis Fiesta operating offices
(HOUSTON, TX Jan 24, 2007) Taxis Fiesta is excited to announce that McReynolds Middle School students who participate in the school’s mentoring program will visit Taxis Fiesta’s operating offices on January 24, 2007. This is the third year that the program has given students the opportunity to view the complex inner workings of the taxicab operation. The annual field trip is a highlight of the mentoring program, which is sponsored jointly by Taxis Fiesta and its sister company, Yellow Cab.
The McReynolds Middle School mentoring program was established in 2005 with the initiative of the management of Taxis Fiesta and Yellow Cab. The mentoring program matches at-risk students with a Taxis Fiesta or Yellow Cab staff member as a mentor. During the school year, the mentor meets with the student over lunch every other week. During their meetings, mentors engage students in ice-breakers and learning games. These sessions help the mentors to identify areas in which the student may be struggling, such as reading or mathematics, so that the student can receive tutorial assistance if needed. The mentors’ chief goal is to inspire the students to reach their full potential and pursue the highest possible level of education. “These students often begin the program without the slightest idea about what life has to offer them or what they can achieve,” said Roman Martinez, president of Taxis Fiesta. “As mentors, we strive to provide the students with a broader view of life, to help the students set goals and plan for an education that will help them achieve those goals.”
The mentoring program includes three field trips. This year, the first field trip was an excursion to the University of Houston and was conducted in collaboration with the Mexican American Studies Program. The Taxis Fiesta field trip, where the students will gain better understanding of their mentors’ important roles in the company, is the second in the series. The program concludes with a third field trip to a recreational area, where mentors and students can reflect upon and celebrate the year’s success.
Taxis Fiesta is working to create awareness of the “Adopt a Middle School Program” within the Houston business community. “We would love to have other companies join us in this mission, so that students at all middle schools within H.I.S.D. can have access to a mentor,” said Mr. Martinez.
